Which band adjustment via outside Hogshead RHD?

Post by Rata Road » Thu Jul 04, 2024 4:42 pm

I'm remotely helping a newbie with his TT, It had no Cab so he has made that, made a nice deck and he's got it running but no reverse or low gear band contact.
My cars are rugged up for the winter and I dont want to dig one out, I know the band adjuster locations are different on the right hand drive Hogshead.
Which ones are on the outside please?

Kevin

Outside band adjustments are opposite of LHD cars. Reverse and brake adjust from the outside.. I could be mistaken

Reverse and brake are on the outside and low is inside. Just the opposite of the left hand drive.

Only us " "Mericans " answering? Most of us including me (sic) have never actually worked on a right hand driven model T.

But yes, as the others have said.

He has just sent me some pics,
Doesn't look right to me, no shaft going through Brake band spring?

Its a 1925, looks later wider brake.

It does look like a wide brake band so it must have a 26-7 hogshead. Note the wider spacing between the brake and first gear pedal. It would also need a four dip pan to clear the wide band. Later pedal shafts are often this short variety. Personally, the full length ones which enter the adjusting screw I feel are more satisfactory and give more support for the shaft in use.

The first gear band/drum must be well worn to be adjusted up so much that the return spring is almost coil bound.

Allan from down under.

The brake spring is short a couple of coils.
Low seems to be missing the special notch washer, hence the extra jam nut.

Spring is too compressed? May be the drum is too worn?
That might be part of why he isn't getting low to work. Either the spring or the band itself may be "bottoming out" resulting in no low gear engaging.

New thicker lining may help for awhile, but a few things in there need to be corrected.

Brake spring has 2 less coils.
Low band ear needs a squeeze to keep the spring from between the ear & shaft.
Low band has enough wear the spring will be over compressed @ full engagement, may bind. Needs relining.

Thanks guys,
Just got an email and he had the rear end jacked up before and once lowered to the ground low gear worked fine, adjusted reverse and that works fine now.
If it was mine I would be doing some replacement work in there like you suggest.
Always learning.....

Great feedback as always guys

Thanks

And to debunk the myth that the removable ears can come off the band if fitted backwards from the rotation direction of the drums, RHD have the band fitted with the removable ears on the right side.
