Made a water temp sensor mount for my Rajo BB

Post by Reno Speedster » Sat Mar 08, 2025 5:54 pm

I got a really nice original Boyce Motometer water temp gauge to go in the dash on my speedster project. The sensor on these is different than modern water temp sensors in that they are not water tight. They had a special sensor mount that they went in. I wanted to make a mount to attach it to the intake manifold heater port on my Rajo BB. I couldn’t just stick it straight in the hole as there is a head-bolt that would interfere, and the capillary tube would be in the way of the manifold. I came up with a design that brought the tube back towards the firewall at a 45 degree angle. Water from the head comes into the mount and surrounds the brass tube the sensor goes into. It needs some more polishing and I might nickel plate it, but it’s looking pretty good. I always like to make things look like they could be something from the period.

Good use for that unused port.
Period correct? Loose the philips screws.

The screws were what I had on hand for the photos. No way they go on the car.

Is there a special name for those bastardised screw heads that take a normal bade and phillips driver?

Allan from down under.

Morgan- I hope you are aware that there is no water in that passage and that it is open to one of the center exhaust ports.

Good lord, no I didn’t know that! It never dawned on me that it would be anything but a water passage. A good idea wasted. No worries, I will come up with something else. Maybe make a custom top tube with a fitting for the sensor.
