Scammers are amongst us!

Post by Larry LaPatka » Thu Jun 26, 2025 3:06 pm

Well it has finally happened to MTFCA. I was trying to help out a neighbor who is new to the Model T family. He needed several 1926/27 Model T parts to go a long way to get his 1926 Model T roadster up and running. I put an ad on this parts section as a favor to him. A gentleman in Utah sent photos and had all the items needed. My neighbor agreed on the price and shipping means and used paypal. To cover himself just in case it was to good to be true. He paypaled the money and as of this date, no goods. Today he called and the phone has been disconnected. Looks like these bastards have infiltrated our glorious website and

Did he use PayPal "Goods and Services" or "Friends & Family"?

If he used Friends and Family, he is SOL. If he used Goods and Services, Paypal will give him his money back by sucking it out of the seller's bank account.

There isn’t a forum user with the email of Flososweet@gmail.com.

Anyone posting items for sale or wanted should NEVER put your contact info in the add. A registered user can look at your profile and send you an email or message.

they are everywhere. i bought a second hand gps unit, a garmon . for a back up camera it needs the BC-35 camera to work. my old 1 uses the bc-30.
well i found a website,in Australia supposedly, and they had 1 for 94 dollars. overstock, and it is discontinued so i had no reason to doubt it. i cliced by it now, used paypal and the paypal mastercard, and a red flash came up and then the transaction was done. i saw the flash ,first word was warning i think so i sent paypal a message, filed a claim right then.
well the fraudster sent a tracking number to me and to them. and it claims to have made it,delivered to the US. well paypal sided with the vendor. i changed the claim but as of so far, i have been out of 94 dollars for about 6 weeks and it aint looking good.
turns out it was a fake website, once i got to looking, none of the lower contact info icons worked, and the real company, doesn't even offer the camera. the seller, shows a address somewhere in ohio, the camera was shipped from china supposedly and oh it gets complicated.
but crooks are everywhere and we all have our turn.
sad but true, and what can i do>? not much of anything. but the last message i sent to paypal, i let them know i would close both my credit accounts that involve their name and reduce usage of paypal to a bare minumum if they can't at least provide a address where the camera was shipped to and their communications with the seller so i can file a police report.
that is the whole purpose of using a credit card online or in the store for me, protection from fraud.

i recently opened a chase account and card for online use after this fiasco started with paypal and i bought myself a tire machine and a balancer for 1500 bucks total free shipping. the first time i tried to use the card for that purchase, i got a fraud alert on my phone and on my email. as soon as i confirmed it was me , the purchase went thru the next try.big purchases, we need to make them on a publicly known site, i made the mistake when i went to a site i knew nothing about until i was out of my money and paypal and mastercard didn't send me a alert of any sort in regards to the camera , so guess which card i will be using for online purchases from now on?
If you can't help em, don't hinder em'

This why we need to return to swap meets. Yes I know it is a lot easier the just hit buy it now. At a swap meet you can see who you are buying from.

I hate to be the one to say this, but you have no one else to blame but yourself. The Forum instructions state that you should not include personnel information in an ad. It isn't necessary for someone to have to log onto the Forum to see its contents, but only to sen PM's & eMails and make postings. Some people try to encrypt it or include it in a photo. But scammers read people & can read them just the same.
So there isn't any "infiltration". The better way to process a sale is to use the Form to send to a member via a PM or eMail. In doing so you can also check how long they were a member.

Hope you realize that you have exposed yourself & friend "forever" unless you go back & edit/delete that info from every ad that has your info in it (WTB or FS) Just do a search on Larry LaPatka

gmail accounts are free to make (real or scammer). So its Here today Gone tomorrow.

Since your name and both city & state are exposed its easy to find out about people.... Did you get a Farm subsidy for $ xx8.48
