Headlight rim removal tool wanted

Post by BRADLOWERY » Fri Oct 17, 2025 5:15 pm

Curious if anyone has one of the wrap around headlight rim removal tools for sale? I have attached photos of what I mean. I do not know if they are reproduced or only made 70ish years ago. You can call me 330-858-2880 or respond on here. Brad

Here’s a link about headlight rim removal. viewtopic.php?t=38311
Several good ideas about other styles and ideas about how todo it. The strap wrench is a pretty good alternative tool.

The other version of Fords rim removal tool is sold by Snyder’s but it’s out of stock.

Looks great, I’d like one of those band wrenches that either is a continuous loop or with the two handle half’s that close to grip the bezel. World anyone have an extra willing to sell?

I think the Service Bulletin has plans to make one from an old style transmission band.

The sketch of the rim removal tool by the OP is the same one in the Ford Service Bulletin.

Have found the version avail from Lang's works well. This tool engages two of the rivets, and the groove ends, to provide a stop for being able to push in very firmly to compress the strong wire spring behind the reflector.

Force the rim in, at same time turning the tool, to release the rivet ends from the bayonet tangs in the lamp housing.

For old rusted or stuck rim, use penetrating oil first under rim edge, and bump around the rim gently with a rubber mallet, to loosen the rim so it can be pushed in.

Here is a strap type made back then, sketch from FordOwner Dealer magazine.

This strap wrench can work too, Home Depot or other big box stores, handle is 14” long, strap 3/4 wide x 34” length, will easily wrap around rim.

When I removed mine I used some WD40 around the backside of the rim. It did help. Every little bit helps.
