Halogen Tail Lites

Post by dunoon » Tue May 26, 2020 1:32 pm

Has anyone had experience putting halogen bulbs in tail lights? I was wondering if the 50/5 halogen bulb would get to hot for the cardboard disc in a 26 tail/brake light? Thanks

I would think it would get too hot in any case cardboard or not. Better besides the original bulb, LED's would be a better choice;

LEDs are to Halogens what Netflix is to Betamax!

The halogen bulb won't hurt the cardboard in a '24-'27 tail lamp.

But after a longer nite travel, sure did warp the plastic lens over the glass tea cup :shock:

I had the dual function halogens in my 26 tail lights. Yeah, they were bright...but sucked up a ton of watts and amps. And yes, they were hot. I switched to dual function LED bulbs in the tails now and they are plenty bright, run much cooler, and use barely any wattage to operate. Switched out the halogen headlights in favor of LED too. Then I ditched the alternator and went back to generator. Works great.

Mark, yes single contact ,think it was Langs # 6H-20 , 6v 20 watt. No markings as the halogen is potted in ceramic, and I thru away the package.
My guess is its one of the 120 lumen type, or approx. 12 candle power?
Lang's doesn't list C.P. It was a bunch brighter than the typical incandescent #63 tail lamp bulbs.
