Holley Vaporizor

A friend of mine has a compliant with his 1927 roadster. It will start and run at low speed, but will 'run out of gas' at more than an idle. This engine uses a Holley vaporizer carburetor. I have very little experience with the vaporizer. I have read a little about them and it seems that the heater plate is a major problem. Yet after cleaning the carb, I find that someone must have installed some new parts in this carb recently. The heater plate seems fine. I cleaned it up and did not find any corrosion or cracks. I flexed the plate and could not detect any problem with the plate. I do see some black carbon on the fuel side of the heater plate. There are or were no gaskets on either side of the heater plate. Should there be? The exhaust manifold was leaking badly and I suspect that this may have been the source of this fuel side carbon. I believe the heater plate fuel side was not sealed and allowed exhaust gas into the fuel side of the heater. I believe the main problem with this carb is that the float level is way to low. I think it should be 3/16 to 1/4". I found it closer to 1/2". I want to clean everything up, reset the float level, check the float needle for seal and try this carb again.

My questions are
1. should there be gaskets on the heater plate?
2. what is the float level?

1. The heater plate uses no gaskets, it needs contact for heat, and good flat surface contact.

2. Same float level as with the NH.

Thanks a million. I suspected that there were no gaskets. I saw those diagrams you posted and Lang's didn't sell any, so..... I set the float level to a little under 1/4" cleaned up the carb, then sealed the openings and applied some vacuum. It held pretty good, so the heater plate is not leaking. Well, back to the garage later to install this thing and try it out. I appreciate the help. These vaporizers are really an odd duck, but we will see how well they work. Thanks Again, Mike
