So I dove into an engine/transmission I recently brought home. I found cylinders 1, 3, and 4 have no Babbitt left at the rod caps, resulting in a lot of play. The inside if the block is glistening with silver flakes.... The caps are all cotter pinned, so i dont think someone slapped an engine together with unserviceable parts.
The mains are tight and show no signs of visible issues. I will open the caps today and see.
My question is this.... if the mains check ok, and the crankshaft is not cracked, can I just do new babbitted rods and caps ? I'll probably do pistons and rings too. Will an engine have an abrupt failure like this due to lack of oil?
Thanks for the help!

Re: Babbitt Question
Since there is no Babbitt in the caps. I would definitely mike the crankshaft. It may be damaged. However, I find it hard to believe there is no babbett at all in those caps!

Re: Babbitt Question
when I say no babbitt, I mean just a very thin skim left. the amount of play is tremendous.
