While I no longer use a magneto post oiler, but, instead use the transmission mounted flywheel pressure feed oiler, caution should be observed when installing a mag post oiler. I once shorted out my magneto when, in screwing the fitting into the side of the mag post housing, it made contact with the pointed steel contact rod in the center of the unit. While some have addressed the problem by adding a spacer, I addressed it by removing the fitting and grind off some of the threaded portion of the fitting so it could be completely tightened without going in far enough to make contact with the steel contact post. It is a common occurrence and may be a reason why some, otherwise good, magnetos do not work. Jim Patrick

One can also see why, unless you perform one of these spacing procedures, even if the fitting does not short out the magneto when fully tightened, the flow of oil is seriously impeded by the minimal space through which the oil needs to gain access to the oil feed tube so that hardly any oil is able to flow to the front. That is why I installed a non-oiling mag post and switched to the pressure feed type that is mounted on the left side top of the hogshead in line with the flywheel and magnets. Jim Patrick
