Ring gear attachment

I'm in the process of removing the magnets from a T flywheel and want to use the spools as oil slingers and as well, I need something to hold the ring gear to the flwheel. The brass bolts are 14-24, and I'm thinking of stacking two spools together (two high) 90 deg apart on the flywheel. Are the original brass bolts strong enough to handle the job with the stacked spools? I would prefer to just use one spool at 45 deg positions but the bolts are too long. Someone posted a few yeas ago to use 1/4 20 bolts, but I'm afraid they will break off in the ring gear. Open to suggestions. Thanks : Bruce

You can rethread the ring gear holes with the 1/4” 20 tap. Be sure to use Loktite on the threads. I don’t think the spools by themselves will fling enough oil

I found spools used in quite a few old speedster builds. Thought I'd give it a try. I counter sunk the screw holes and used new brass screws. I cut them flush and peened them as well as Red Locktite. I have about a thousand miles on this motor now and everything looks to be well oiled.

If you are removing the magnets remember that they help hold the triple gear pins in place.
It is a good idea to use a ring made the help hold the pins.
You can get slingers that match the ring to sling the oil. The kit comes with bolts to hold the starter ring gear in place. Dan

Good point Dan. I found that out after the fact. I have some retro work to do.

I put my old ring gear and spools on to throw oil and it does a great job.

Good idea Dennis; I'm surprised it doesn't interfere with the starter drive. Sure looks like a great "oil pump".
