What should a brass horn sound like?
Hello....I have a 1914 Model T, but the only horn I could find was off a 1912 Model T. It was nice looking and solid brass so I decided to use it. I think it has an OK sound, but my wife says it sounds like a sick goose. I was wondering what the horns were supposed to sound like? Were there differences between the years? Are there certain reeds that sound better? Can you tune your horn to sound better?

I have a 1914 & the horn does sound something like a goose. In the garage it seems quite loud but out on the road it seems very quiet. I can see why the hand Klaxtons were so popular. Sick? I don't think so, just not very loud.

If Henry thought it should sound that way, then that is the way it aught to be.

If Henry could listen now to Bryan's 107 year old car horn, would he say that it sounds as it should? If I understand the OP's Q, he wanted to know if his horn was sick or healthy.

I think they all sound different to some degree. They aren't musical instruments; they are alarm devices. Many of them emit a sound evocative of that emitted when a goat comes into contact with an electrified fence.
