Yes, you are very correct! Any Model T guy should know this issue and the answer.

Five cents in 1908 would amount to about a dollar and ten cents today. The magazine would still a a bargain at $1.10, but you can't buy a magazine for that today. What's more, in 1908 there was no income tax or Social Security tax, and to the best of my knowledge, no sales tax. If you earned a nickel, you owned it. If an item was priced at one nickel, that's what you paid for it. Banks aslo paid interest on money on deposit, and interest earned was not taxed. That "dollar a day" would go a long way.
"Corporate taxes", if any existed then, would have further reduced buying power.

Ford made great leaps forward in 1908, 1928, 1932, 1949, and 1954. (OHV engines, T Bird) The 1964 1/2 Mustang also changed the automotive landscape.

Re: Why is this T related?
This was the issue that carried the famous first public announcement of the Model T, and which resulted in the Ford sales office being "well-nigh inundated" within just a few days.
