steering gear

Is anyone familiar with this aftermarket steering gear?? The housing contains planetary

So, somehow you would absolutely need to bypass the stock Ford steering box. I once drove a car that had a Ford Bronco steering box mounted to the frame and driven through the original box under the steering wheel which resulted in a final steering ratio of around 30:1. The steering wheel had maybe 10-15 turns lock to lock and I almost ended up in the ditch before getting it stopped.

That looks like the way Henry and his boys should designed it. It would eliminate the springy feel of the long steering shaft.

You will need to install a brace just before the steering box and engine block both top and bottom or the frame will flex and weaken quickly. The upper column tube absorbed the torque before and now it is going into the frame channel. You now have a torque multiplier.

I have installed a era accessory Ross “cam and lever” steering box in my T. Ross designed a bolt in “frame boxing “ into the design to handle the torque issue. To retain the look of the original steering box I created a “locking disc” that replaced the original gears.

It looks a lot like this Overland Model 91 steering gear box. It’s the same as the Ford steering gear except mounted at the bottom. Those 3 holes bolt to the frame and the bracket on bottom bolted to the frame/motor mount to stabilize the bottom.

That’s also how much steering shaft was sticking out of it. There was a key way then another on the shaft coming from the column with a collar that clamped them tightly together.

I have the same one on my merc. As Hank mentioned , you need to connect it to the engine, otherwise too much torque down there. I found a heavy piece of bent steel did mine nicely. I like Hanks bracing idea, and think I’ll add that, too. Can’t hurt! I love the quadrant end, too. I’ve had people tell me several makes cars, but I’ve never determined yet what it came from , so would love to know for sure. I’ve seen several now with little differences so likely it was a several year item.
