Knowing how some are opposed to using a buzz box tester, I constructed a second unit that is powered by an AC transformer with 0 to 15 volts AC out.

It is interesting to note the sound of an AC vs DC adjusted ignition coil.

Just can't justify having a microchip dominate the turning of a screw ....

Top box AC powered as Voltage from the magneto. Bottom box DC powered as per battery.

I TOO BUILT MY OWN, I USE THE LIONEL TRANS FORMER AS IT HAS BOTH AC AND DC, I AGREE THE DC GIVES THE BETTER SOUND, 3-3--1/2 AMPS AND YOUR GOLDEN , ITS PURE FUN TO TAKE A PART THAT'S 100 YEARS OLD WITH A LITTLE TINKERING BRING IT BACK TO LIFE,GOOD AS NEW, IT TOOK THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY NEARLY 100 YEARS TO COPY A COIL FOR EACH PLUG--MY MY HOW INTERESTING,

I use 2 d cell batteries in series to set the tension. Set the tension so that the coil just starts to buzz. The coil should throw a spark across a .130 inch gap. It is simple and affordable.
Not recommended for Montana 500 type driving, just 32 mph driving.
I know I will probably get beat up for using this method but it looks for me. I can give the logic behind this procedure if anyone is interested.

I built a box using an American Flyer train transformer for the power supply, as it puts out 7 to 14 VAC. yes I know there are much better systems out there to texst coil, but this was simple to build with stuff on hand and it will get a coil to work--maybe not optimally but it will work!
