Muncie transmission manual
I have a nice Muncie transmission that I got from a friend who passed away a few years back. Is in good shape and came complete with the special U joints and the cutdown torque tube and drive shaft. As you can see in the photo, it’s going in my 26 speedster build. What I don’t have is a manual for this transmission. I see that there used to be a reprinted manual available for them. If someone has a copy of this (digital or paper) they could send me I would appreciate it.
Also, does this take an odd bearing between the input and output shafts like the warford?

I am in just the same situation as you. I just got a car that requires assembly and it has a Muncie transmission. If someone does come up with a manual for this transmission I would really like a copy too.

The Muncie bolts directly to the back of the T hogshead/pan. There are no adalpter plate etc as used on the iron case Warford. You stated you had the special ujoints- only the front uses a special ujoint with the female end shorter than a ford u-jont. The rear uses a stock Ford u-joint, but there is a female-female square hole coupler that you need for the rear u-joint. This coupler adapts the Ford u-joint male end to the male output shaft on the Muncie.

I have the MUNCIE installation manual/parts list, and some more information too. I will need to make a "pdf" file of it to send (Monday/Tuesday next week.). Please send me an email and I will reply with the information. The Muncie gear box was sold under different names. Hi Morgan,
I have built several Muncies the short U/joint in the front and the adaptor in the rear are the holy grail of Muncies. Check the U/joint for wear they have a small wear surface in the square so many are worn out. The Female square adaptor on the rear can be made from a 10-3-22X Spicer yoke cut down to size.
As for the pocket bearing I have seen drawings with a roller bearing in the pocket but have never found one. Every one I have worked on had bronze bushings in them even in the counter shaft. The input & output bearings can be replaced with sealed units that will cut down on oil leaks. I have always been able to find everything I needed at the local bearing house. They have a threaded hole on the tail shaft that works well for a rear support ( I highly recommed one and of coarse Aux. brakes )

StevenS. Thanks for the offer to scan and send the manual. I will send you a PM with my email address. Craig: I don’t understand all of the adapter pictures that you show. I have the long round adapter with the square hole and the universal joint with the short end. What are the others for?

Thanks Craig. My u joint looks quite good. No play in it. I also have the adapter. Mine came with a home made support, but it does not seem to fit, at least I can’t figure out how.

Hi Steve, Sorry I didn't explain the two duplicate pics are of the output adapter I made & the yoke I made it from. The next two are of the input adapter I made to replace the U/joint for the input. ( its not cut to length yet ) and some of the impact sockets that can be used to make them. They are 13/16" square bud wheel inner lugnut impact sockets ( the sockets are used to tighten wheels on big rigs to 500 lb.ft. )to fit the Muncie and the square is 7/8" cold rolled steel milled to fit in the socket & the output of a model T. This makes a input much like a Warford. I have more Muncies that U/joints. The first Muncie I purchased had one on the input made out of cut up T U/joints. Crude but appeared to have been used for quite awhile.
The front flange assembly has to be bored out to accept the socket but that should be no issue if using the sealed bearings. These are not original ideas of mine they have been past on to me from others. With testimonials that they work. Past performance is in no way a garantee of future results. All the parts used are capable handling more torque than a T can produce.

Thanks, Craig. Makes sense now. Fortunately I have a good condition U-joint and the rear adapter so don't need to make anything up. Well, maybe a rear support. Have to figure that one out.

I did my radius rods like shown when I installed my Warford. That allowed me to get things setup before riveting the two sections together.
