Drive shaft/pinion taper?

Post by speedytinc » Sun Dec 12, 2021 5:06 pm

Some body out there knows the angle of the d/s pinion taper? Knowing is a step ahead of figuring it out. I am in the process of shortening some drive shafts for a muncie & jumbo giant transmissions & need to remake the end. Once I get the ends machined I will be lapping the gears to fit.
Thanks in advance.

I do not know the answer to your question, but wouldnt the other end be easer to cut and machine?

Of course, but this end is the bad one. I have the capability & no need to ruin a good one.

I see. For some reason my work lap top shows it clearer than my home unit. Thanks

When I did mine, I cut from the U-joint end, the shaft I was using was good at the pinion end. If I made the bushing area a little undersized (I did!), no problem, just made a new bushing to fit. Pinion end, would require more work; taper, thread, keyway and press fit for the pinion bearing. Even the modern replacement pinon bearing would still need about the same press fit, so the inner race does not spin. I had someone I know do the square end machining.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Actually the pinion taper is 3½" per ft on diameter. This taper has an included angle of 16.594 degrees.
