803-815 Forest Ave Portland Maine

Post by Michael Paul » Fri Dec 17, 2021 10:49 am

While sorting through some boxes of literature, I found a 12 page catalog from the Automobile Exchange and Tire company. This is the back cover photo of the yard. I believe this was posted in a horseless carriage gazette a few years back. This photo was taken in 1919. I wonder what's at that address now?

Those Junkyard photos are so intriguing. The older the better. A similar one prompted me to paint it in color several years ago.

My Christmas wish is to have Doc Brown give me a DeLorean ride back to spend the day! I can guarantee I would do something to disturb the space- time continuum! What a dilemma, which one to take and where to hide it!

This was one of the last good wrecking yards in this area, Wheat Wrecking, Ranger, Texas. It's been "cleaned up". There used to be a two-headed calf in the front window to the left of the front door and big 1926 or so Buick sedan in the front row to the right of the office. Location was along old Highway 80, aka The Bankhead Highway, later I-20, and now old I-20.

Born and raised in Portland, Maine, I don’t remember anything like this on Forest Avenue in late 1950’s - but a couple miles away on Marginal Way were scrap metal yards with 1920’s and 1930’s cars stacked high - may have been the remnants when this part of Forest Ave was cleaned up. The trees in the background are Baxter’s Woods - a 29 acre bird sanctuary.

If you could go back to 1923 and buy a new Ford for $235 you couldn't do it with today's money. You would have to take 1923 money with you. I wonder if you could buy $235 in 1923 bills and coins for less than today's inflated equivalent of $3703.52. That's mighty cheap for a factory fresh Model T, so I guess the trip would be worthwhile even if you had to pay that much for the old money to pull it off.

Thanks Michael. It's nice to see where that came from. I don't remember where I saw it. It must have been some car publication but didn't have a clue what the car was.

Detroit had Barney Pollard - he collected hundreds and hundreds of cars from the early years. He had so many that he hung them on end from scaffolding. They were considered an eyesore and after a fire and a lot of pressure he sold some at auction and trashed the rest in the early 70's.

My friend has a 1912 Model T he bought at the auction and it has been stuffed away in his barn ever since....totally unrestored and dinged up a bit.

I was familiar with Barney Pollard, and know a LOT of people that have ex-Pollard cars.
I saw the junkyard photo 40 years ago, and no one knew where it was taken at that time.
FINALLY i find out! I am glad to finally know!

37 x 5 1/2 tires were pricey at $94 each!
