Re: Axle Bearing Sleeves
In my experience, Inner and outer sleeves are the same, but be mindful about where the locating dimples go. If you are installing lightly used parts, put the best ones on the outer.

Re: Axle Bearing Sleeves
Each axle housing uses the same sleeves.
The right housing uses two #2509 right sleeves, one for the outer and one for the inner. Be sure the dimple in the sleeve enters the recess in the housing.
The left or ring gear housing uses two #2509B left sleeves.
Like to ink mark the location of that recess and for the sleeve dimple to be sure it engages first time!

Re: Axle Bearing Sleeves
My opinion on this topic... the outer bearing sleeves (closest to the wheel) can only be installed LEFT sleeve on the left and RIGHT sleeve on the right side to fit the locking dimple and clear the grease cup.
I thought about the inner sleeves when I rebuilt my axle a few years back... so I made a few sketches and feel that each axle half should have a LEFT and RIGHT sleeve. This allows the bearing loading to be in the area opposite of the split. Also all the V splits are pointing in the same rotational direction.
But in the big picture it probably doesn't really matter. Because when I disassembled my axle it had 3 of one type and 1 of the other!

Re: Axle Bearing Sleeves
I'm in agreement with you Bill regarding the rotational direction on the inner sleeves.

Re: Axle Bearing Sleeves
After analyzing the bearing loading, my opinion is: put the correct ones in the outer positions, but the inner ones sre not so important because the bearing loading is reversed between accelerating and braking.

Re: Axle Bearing Sleeves
The MTFCA Rear axle guidebook recommends "two right sleeves in right half of differential" (and two left in left half). However, Bill's analysis makes complete sense. I did not find any info in the Ford service manual other than making sure the outer ones were correct.

Re: Axle Bearing Sleeves
The statement in Ford Service does include the term ''housings" which can mean a Left or Right housing , indicating the sleeves are paired to go to each housing. That is what have done for my installs, guess I will pay attention when removing old sleeve from the inners to see how they were placedI did not find any info in the Ford service manual other than making sure the outer ones were correct.

The only photo that can be found of an inner sleeve placed is this one in Ford Service of removing a right hand one, as you can see the oil drain to identify a right housing. Can't find any more info in Service Bulletins either.
End result.....install of inner perhaps makes no difference if a right or left style sleeve is used, as long as the dimple locks it in place!
