Camshaft bushing clearances

Post by Bruce Compton » Mon Feb 21, 2022 5:45 pm

Just curious as to what the desired clearance is between the cam and the cam bushing. Thanks : Bruce

Since there is a lot of growth in the linear line, I normally drive mine in just inward enough to the inside of the block casting. I notch the top back of the bushing and grove the top inside as well to ensure oil is tracking well from the back to front from the flywheel.

Ford lists the cam bearing clearance as ideal .001 and allowable .003 so replacing the bush one in brass and with the issues with the likes of the triple gear bushing if to tight, Ford allowance is .002 for them, I go for the .003.

As far as driving in the 3rd bush/bearing in the block, it is flush on the inside and gives about an 1/8" between the block and last cam lobe. You have to allow for the push rod/cam follower that is wider than the cam lobe.
