temperature probe in sherman head???

I have a Sherman head on one of my Fords. I was told it was a port for removing sand from the mold. I don't know much about this process, but that is what I was told.

yes you can install a temp gauge sensor in that hole. Some heads have them and some don't.

I had a brand new Bosch mechanical temp gauge still in the packaging (who knows how long I've had that laying around). Installed it in the head and am running a 190* temp consistently after about a 15 minute drive, seems about right to me.

Back in the 1920’s many flat head T racers ran a extra water pipe out of that location in the head in order to improve cooling circulation at the back cylinders. The extra pipe would tie into a modified outlet at the front of the head. If you want a to use a mechanical gauge you can tap the T block rear core plug hole as another option.

The temp probe out of that location in top of the head, as shown, is just fine also.

When pouring a casting you have to hold the core some how from moving when being poured, some use the core others use chablits that melt into the pour. Years ago when I made some cast iron heads, I held the core from the side and so there was a soft plug in the side of the head.

Not a bad idea to put a zinc in.
