securing oil lamp fonts

A couple of years ago, I either lost the font. or someone stole it, from the oil taillamp on our '21 Touring. :shock: I have since found a replacement, but have not painted and installed it. Anybody got a tip on how to make sure the font is tight and secure, other than what would be obvious? I realize most any adult would be able to twist one off, but I'd like to have them tight and as secure as possible so they won't fall off.
I hate to take them off and haul them around when on the road, especially if they have oil in them.

There is a ring of spring steel in the base of the lamp. This has bent down 'legs' which contact the font They keep it from ratlling, and keep it under tension so it does not dis-engage from the keeper slots in the font. Often this 'spring' has lost its spring, or even has rusted away. If this is the case you may have to resort to a discretely placed set screw to stop the font rotating off the pins over which it is normally screwed. That'll stop the souvenier takers also.

Guess I don't need to worry about them. The car has wheel issues that I cannot afford to fix so it will be someone else's problem.
