First free start. Not bad for a 1905 Ford

Post by Rob » Sat Jul 30, 2022 12:10 pm

Ford Motor Company advertised that it's new four cylinder Model B was capable of "starting on the switch." Yesterday, I received my first one. I took the "B" back to Dean Yoder's. He helped me with a few problems I encountered (he's mechanically inclined, me, not so much......). We went to start it for the first time, and below is a few second video of what happened. It's been close before, but this was the first time it started and kept running "on the switch."

This 1906 article in the English publication AutoMotor mentions starting on the switch near the bottom of the story. A company in London attempted to contract with FMC for 200 Model B chassis in late 1905/early 1906, but FMC had moved on to preparation for models K and N;

Well, I guess that trip back to Dean's was worth it. Free start. I think you owe Dean a free dinner.

Yep...to my shock, 2 weeks ago my '13 gave me a free start "on the switch"...for some reason I got in the habit of turning the switch on Batt even before "priming", just "to see", then shut off to prime, and lo and behold old Clarabelle fired off on me! I never adjusted the spark lever so fast so as not to lose her! Today again she almost did...2 "good chugs" but alas not quite enough. Oh well.

Steve's did Sunday morning in my driveway. We were both a little surprised, it seemed. His ignition was acting up Sunday, so it wasn't a total shock.

See what I did there? ;)
