AC brake linkage

Post by Bobbbenner » Mon Aug 22, 2022 11:58 am

I have purchased the AC brakes from Larry Sidmore.
Now I need the linkage.
Who’s selling the kit?
Or does anyone have the linkage for sale?
Thanks

While he may have started back up again, Last year when my father inquired, he was not making them. Please let us know if they are available from him again. Thanks!

Do a search of "mtfca AC brake" There have been many posts over the years showing different ways to build your own setup either cable or rods. Personally, I would go with cable. Stay away from any that say or use the parking brake lever, that defeats the reason to have the ACs as brakes.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

He is laid up with multiple maladies. Two knee replacements!

He is not making linkages.

Anyone else?

Don't use rods. They never used them. The people who make reproductions always seem to get everything messed up.

I, too, would use cable, but I like to post this picture every time Larry says that. It's true that most were cable, but...

Larry, I respectfully disagree with you, The linkage made by Rich Baughman were top nutch. I agree it is not original but much easier to adjust than cables. I personnaly experienced both and prefer the linkage made by Rich. Really hope he will recovering.

If using cables I found If you get modern car cables ( I used 1960s chevy truck ) that go from the brake lever/ peddle to the equalizer they have a 5/16" fine thread 4"-6" long if you clamp them together and put the threaded end at the rear wheels it will give you a extra place to adjust at. while you are at it get the equalizer yoke it works also.

My father made his own cable equalizer last year copying the original style AC cable type equalizer from numerous photos here on the MFTCA. It works very well. I hope to make a set for my RPU this winter. When I do, I will be sure to document the process and share here on the forum.

In the meantime, the next time I am out at his garage, I'll try to take some photos. One thing he did to make the trial and error fabrication simpler was to set up a mock torque tube and hogs head on his work bench. Made fabricating the armature simple, since it was waist height and then he mounted down on the car.

For those interested, here are photos of an original AC linkage.
Mc Eacherns reproduction is present in some of the photos.

The hardest part to make is probably the piece that fits on the brake pedal. Luckily I found one. Hope to install it next year. Too busy this year.

Weld a tab on like for the rocky mtn brakes, only above the shaft line not below.
