Steep grade
Good evening forum chums…..I hope everybody’s having an outstanding weekend…. Been working on the model T this weekend that I got a couple weeks back ……some long overdue maintenance needed to be done, and I’ve got a question regarding my driveway …….which is roughly a half a mile long ……pretty steep grade …….you wouldn’t come up in second gear and if you stopped halfway through I don’t think he would get the car started again…. It pulled the hill OK today but I’d like some of the experienced drivers to tell me where I should have the spark advance and throttle to pull a half mile Hill…. Is that distance a long time not to be getting some oil on the band?….. Thanks in advance my friends…… Cheers and yours aye from the old Scot!

Re: Steep grade
Edwin, first gear band needs to stop the drum. No slipping, no need for oil. Just keep it engaged firmly so it doesn't slip.Levers set in the usual position as the car should be under full power, just as it would be going down the road. You might retard it so it can pull a bit longer in top gear, but not for low gear.
Hope this helps,
Allan from down under.

Re: Steep grade
In low gear, 12 to 14 MPH is about as fast as you want to go. If the car is in good shape and in a good state of tune, it might surprise you what it will pull in high gear.

Re: Steep grade
Going downhill can become a problem as well. Use low gear to hold down the speed. Fully retarded the spark. Use the transmission brake to keep the speed under 14 mph.
A ruxtell axel or warlord transmission would be a plus.

Re: Steep grade
Any time you use low gear, it is essential to keep firm, steady pressure on the pedal to prevent band slippage. A T can run for long distances in low gear, if it is necessary, but the pedal must be kept firmly pressed down for the entire time.
