1926 Coupe fabric please

Post by Chris Barker » Mon Aug 29, 2022 6:48 am

About 30 years ago, the previous owner of my '26 Coupe retrimmed with a kit presumably bought from a US supplier.
Now, after driving the car 40,000 miles, I have worn through the seat cushion fabric.

I see that the fabrics that are supplied in kits now are a similar pattern, but mostly gray.

Does anyone know where I might buy some the green material used in my car please?
Here are photos of the seat, and a detail of the same fabric on the door card.

Thanks

Classitique for sure. I don't think the striping was blatantly obvious originally. It was just kinda there.

Thank you. However -
I had already checked Classtique (BTW the link above is wrong - something else entirely)
They only offer a gray material - nothing like mine.

Cartouche have taupe, but it doesn't seem to have the green stripe.

Any other suggestions?

Oscar Wilde or Bernard Shaw, or maybe Churchill said that Britain and America are divided by a common language.
I'm in England and am puzzled.

Thank you for your posts but --
My car's (American sourced) fabric is BROWN with a green stripe.
BROWN with a green stripe seats, BROWN with a green stripe door cards, BROWN headlining, BROWN quarter panels.
As in my photos.

So please stop telling me about GREY (or gray)

Chris, Some one in the distant past upholstered your vehicle with the 1923-25 brown with green stripe fabric color and pattern. That was original in my 1925 coupe, but I did something similar--I upholstered using grey with a red stripe because that is what I liked. Seems like some supplier might be able to get some original brown 1923-25 fabric for your seats which should match what is in your car.

Correct 1926 -‘27 Grey with red stripes. You may not like it but those are the breaks.

Ah I see. Yeah, there is probably a mill in England that makes it but I don't have any further advice other than find a supplier over there.

I don't believe the seat fabric was brown until his brakes failed!

My early 26 Coupe (and the early Tudor) used that EXACT upholstery material, i.e., brown with green stripes. I removed samples of it from the seat in my 26 coupe. I have been looking for that material for years to no avail. In the meantime, I went with gray with white stripe which is more of a 27 upholstery. Looks nice but I know it is wrong for my car. My car is a Oct 1925 improved "26 model" and they initially used the brown with green stripe material, then sometime in 1926 switched to the gray with green stripe. They were described by Ford as "hard fabric" and "soft fabric," with the hard fabric being the brown with green stripe. Interestingly, back in the 70's and 80's the brown and green stripe was what the upholstery guys made their kits out of, at least that was what I saw.

Years ago, Bill Hirsch had a mill in either Ireland or England specially weave the brown with green stripe material and sold it for something like $40 a yard. It was a perfect copy. Since I was spending my money frivolously at the time on things like food for my kids, I just couldn't swing it and then it disappeared. I even talked to Bill about it, begging him to find some around his place (hah!). No luck. I suppose if we all somehow went together and commissioned a mill in the UK and provided them with excellent samples, we could get this material again. But how many people want it? From a practical standpoint, you might be stuck with the gray and green stripe material. Now, if you happen to find some, keep me in mind!

Upholstery fabric darkens from dirt, dust, nicotine, mold and mildew, engine oil vapor and age. Here are photos of the original upholstery of my recently sold 1926 Fordor that, when new, was grey with red stripes. Jim Patrick

It would seem to me in this day and age that if someone advertised to commercially reproduce a desired custom pattern it would be worth pursuing: https://www.weft.design/

Owner’s of barn fresh TT’s, T trucks and rusty, unrestored drivers would appreciate upholstery kits made of burlap feed sacks with the purina checkerboard logo still on the burlap. Burlap was a popular replacement upholstery material among farmers back in the day. It was cheap, durable and abundant. Jim Patrick

PS. It was not a problem back when men would not be caught dead in shorts, but these days, most men wear shorts, so burlap might get kinda itchy.
