Wood, Leather, and Cloth Transmission Bands

Yesterday I jumped into the project of replacing my transmission band with Kevlar bands. I assumed my bands were cloth, because it seems that cloth was the most popular band material. When I removed the rivets and looked at the old bands I was surprised to see a thin cloth band, with a leather band attached to the cloth band. Additionally the leather band had around 16 holes punched in it, with wooden plugs placed in each hole.

Was this a popular type band 'back in the day'? I would appreciate any information someone might have.

The "wooden plugs" are likely corks.

Yup. "In the day" several manufacturers supplied band lining with cork inserts. They were quite popular and got good reviews.

Here is one type of cork reinforced linings, there were a couple of mfg. in the day.

Hudson used cork clutch plate lining in a wet clutch for years.

Thanks for the information! If I assume that my bands were purchased and installed around 1918, as the advertisement above suggests, I guess that they served me well... and it is about time that I changed them.
