Generator gear alignment

Should the generator gear run flush with the cam gear? Mine is back about an eighth of a inch.

Either the cam bearings are too loose, That is the thrust surface is worn, allowing the gear to go forward in the block or the gasket on the generator is too thick. You can check the timing gear by removing the timer and see if the shaft will move forward and backward.

What kind of cam gear you running? That may be the issue. Dan M. bronze gears line up correctly.
The gears should line up.

Is there end play in the generator! Perhaps you need a bushing or bearing. And one other thing. Does the cam gear align with the crankcase gear? If it does, the problem is in the generator.

That’s the pisser, I rebuilt the generator and put in sealed bearings.

1/8" off is about right if the rear bearing is set all the way in the housing. For this to happen, the front bearing is not all the way in the front housing or on the armature shaft all the way. (assuming you used the correct bearings)

If you dont put the rear bearing felt retaining washer back in, you are off that thickness also. Some wavy washers @ the rear should solve the problem once the front bearing is completely seated. A lesser quality fix is to place a new felt washer in the housing between it & the bearing as a spacer.
