Stewart 160

I had recently taken apart a Stewart 160 that I bought for parts a year ago. The dials were swollen and upon disassembly, they crumbled. The trip mechanism was also frozen.

Fast forward to a few days ago, I purchased on the forum a set of parts of a 160 which had a few broken pieces but good dials. It didn’t come with glass.

I combined the parts including glass, and below is what I have now from that endeavor. I actually have two of these. This one and one with a plated face ring that’s currently on my Centerdoor dash.

Before reassembly, I was able to reset the trip dials to all zeroes and the mileage to 1 (which I assume is 1,000).

I am considering sending these out to make sure they actually function. I just need to acquire the address of the gent who repairs these

Possibly one of the rarest speedometer items I have run across is the lubrication tag that came with the Stewart Model 160 speedometer kit. The tag provided the owner the information necessary to properly maintain his Ford when a colored odometer dial came into view and was kept out of sight by a spring attached to the speedometer. Unfortunately, as Will found out, the pot metal odometer dials swell, making the speedometer unserviceable, but the booklet that Jim has provided in this thread and the lubrication tag are of great interest when installing a Stewart speedometer. I have only seen two of these tags.

Another point of interest, I have quite a few NOS Stewart Model 160 speedometers, and every one has swollen odometer dials!!

The 160 I just bought at Russ’s suggestion has PLASTIC dials. Woo Hoo!
