My "new" speedometer was fine until...

I tried out my newly installed Stewart speedometer with a run into town for groceries. The first leg, about five miles, was fine. It showed about one mph faster than the GPS, which I consider close enough. At 30 mph GPS the speedometer showed 31. Close enough for me. After shopping at the first store I backed out of my parking spot and headed for the second. Now the speedometer was erratic. It stayed at zero, then the drum would suddenly spin up to 40 or 50, then fall back to the actual speed, or even back to zero. It did this repeatedly all the way to the second store, a distance of about two miles. After shopping at the second store, again I backed out of my parking space and headed for my next stop, which was home. Again, the speedometer function was erratic, suddenly spinning up to 40 or 50, then falling back to the actual speed or to zero.

Maybe the cable is dry ? Did you lube it prior to installation ?

Well, Since there are now two recent reports of this happening I believe there should be a recall. Is there a Lemon law for this?

Steve, This is a fairly common problem with Model 100 and Model 102 speedometers. The magnetic drum has become loose on the main shaft and is now hitting the aluminum speed cup. I would disconnect the cable immediately. The solution is to take the speedometer entirely apart and remove the magnetic drum from the shaft. Clean the drum and, using a small amount of J-B Weld, place the drum back onto the shaft. Use a vice to insure the drum is securely pressed onto the shaft and be sure to have the fine speed adjustment free to move. This is not a repair for amateurs, but I know you have worked on your speedometer and its components. I hope this helps. Russ Furstnow
