Front springs 1926 Ford T

Post by dacapt1948 » Tue Nov 08, 2022 1:41 pm

My question is, the front springs have a clamp one on each side of the springs under radiator. Are they supposed to be tight? They do move when shaken but they stay in place. They are noisy.

1926 Tudor
Thank you.

No matter what area of the Model T it will always be a little noisy and a little squeaky..... As far as lubricating the spring you can lift the car by the frame and let the axle dangle a little bit, mix up some powdered graphite with some chassis Grease and using a short bristle brush to apply the grease between the leaves at the end when you separate the leaves with a thin blade screwdriver. Replace those clamps and then you could make sure they're snug. The clamps will stay in place because of a "finger like " elevation on the clamp fits into a hole in one of the leaves that keeps that in position after tightening.

Post a picture.

It sounds like you might be describing an early style front motor mount/spring clamp. If so, YES it needs to be tight and FIRMLY hold the springs that they do not move relative to the crossmember. The fact that it would be incorrect vintage for the car doesn’t mechanically make any difference so long as it’s working properly. If the front spring clamp/motor mount does not FIRMLY hold the springs the steering gets a real loose feel to it.

I think Ford may have called those clips.
