Working at Dean’s on the 1910 Ford Special racer

Post by Rob » Thu Nov 17, 2022 9:23 am

The racer is going back together. Working again at Dean Yoder’s shop as it comes back to life. The flywheel had departed from the crankshaft at speed a few summers ago.

what part of this T is a 1910 model? The long steering column, if original, would be from a 1911 Model T, torpedo or open roadster. What model year is the engine? A close up would be interesting to see.

Darel, it’s one of the 6 or so “Special” racer motors Ford built and raced, 1910-1912. This is the 298 cu.in. motor. They have a Bosch dual ignition mag, larger flywheel without magneto magnets, and auxiliary exhaust ports on the left side of the motor. And it is fast! Until the flywheel comes off…..

It is really a treat to see pictures of it. Dean must enjoy the work. How lucky for us that we can see this happening.
Thanks for taking the time to share it.

That is a really special "special"! Part the real "real thing", part recreation using proper era parts just as the original would have used at the factory. Truly a representation of very important racing and general automotive history! It is something that should be seen and heard, especially in action.

Good to see it going together again!

Agreed Rich! Thank you so much Rob for sharing your exploits! A collector of your caliber could simple work and enjoy your autos in a vacuume, but instead you choose to share with the hobby. Thank you so much for the opportunity to come along for the ride!

I remember Dean having some problems with the mag. I make a distributor to replace it, it's a dual fire 4cylinder.

What is on the transmission inspection cover? A foot rest?
It is interesting that is has the 1911 "shape."

Keith, yes, a foot rest. Your heel goes there. From that spot the auxiliary exhaust ports are managed by sliding a lever with the upper part of your foot. It’s actually a pretty good arrangement.

And what about the driver side of the dash? Is that a cover (a back-of-dash hood) to hide the back end of the engine? And what is on top of it? A fake "filler cap" to look like an oil reserve?

Tim D.

I am interested in your dual fire distributor. Are you producing them for sale? You can PM or email through the forum if you do not want to post details here.

Rob

Maybe you can take the hood off and take a few pictures to show them the engine and the firewall. Maybe you will have fewer questions. On the other hand, you might get triple the questions. Oh the things we do for an old pile of metal.
