Murphey Top Fasteners

Post by J1MGOLDEN » Fri Dec 30, 2022 1:04 pm

When many Ford items were changed from brass to steel about 1915-1916, did the Murphey fasteners continue to be made in brass?

Bruce's Big Black Book does not have much specific information on 1916 Fords.

Exactly when things changed from brass to steel does not appear very definite.

Would a Judging Guidelines book answer all these questions?

I have some old nickel on brass ones. I assumed they were offered after '16.
I haven't seen steel ones.

When did I do that?

Most common sense items were made of brass right up to the end. Murphy was just one of several companies making these. In 1917 these fasteners became nickel plated, but were still brass. A magnet is a good way to choose the ones to use.

Hi Guys.
Original Smith is correct that they all were brass, but they converted to nickel plated brass in 16. I have lots of original tops and side curtains that reflect that change. Now Ford didn't like anything going to waste, so any that were left over from 15 could have been put on a later year car.
