Moto Meter Problem

I just installed a new motometer and gull wing cap. I put the rubber gasket between the meter and cap and tightened it up. A few miles and I see water filling up the meter. (Overfilled the rad). How did the water get up in there? Never had this problem with two of my other cars.

Good question! The moto-meter itself is a sealed unit or should be. I never have put a rubber gasket on mine on the outside, I would have to look but don't recall putting one on the inside ether. Don't recall water even coming out the filler neck more then maybe a little steam even if over filled. You might look at your overfill tube, it might be blocked. If everything is sealed sealed tight, might be forcing the water in to the meter. ?
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas! :shock:

You may be onto something with the overflow pipe. It does come up quite high compared to my others. I had to take the meter apart to get the water out. I have since added silicone under the rubber gasket but no chance to try it yet.

The original Boyce uuits, the part that sticks into the radiator was sealed. If the end of tube is open on yours (you can see the cement holding the temp gauge) it might be allowing the water to be forced into the meter body.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas! :shock:

Sounds like a defective meter to me. Its a solid round temp sensor leading up to the meter itself so I don't see how water can possibly get up into the meter part unless there's a hole in the sensing part.

Colin, those moto meters with the wings look pretty on a brass radiator. I put one on a "12" with a new Brass Works radiator. I found out that it was not a good idea. The filler neck solder leaked and the rivets got loose. I sent the radiator back for repair and again after several tours, the same thing happened. I replaced the wings with a dog bone and never had a problem. Others may argue with me but I think the new brass is not stiff enough to handle the wind vibrations of the wings. Just my .02. Dick C.
