That's a very low rate, assuming a warmed-up engine and clean, 20W oil.

This is the oil pipe out of the very first model T’s. The later ones ere a vast improvement.

‘Vast Improvement’... I should say !! 6-7 times more volume. Good information Kim. Thanks 🤔

WOW the first oil flow pipes weren’t much but maybe a little! The later were much better. When 09 T engines are rebuilt does a purist put that back in or use a later improved line. I’m not trying to be a smart guy but it does make me wonder! Thanks for the education. Much appreciated.

Too bad there isn't a date on that report. I think from the service bulletins, the new design came out in 1924?

Thanks Kim! What a great document. I'll bet those lab guys would have never dreamt that over 100 years later, we'd be looking at their report, and they could not even begin to conceive of the means by which we're viewing it!

Is there any evidence that the very early oil line had the mounting ear with the single hole to secure the oil line or is the picture shown the oil line without the mounting bracket. If the very early line didn’t have the mounting bracket how was it secured.

Did the early pistons have oil return holes in the lower ring groove? It may be that oil control issues precluded higher oil delivery rates.

The oil tube on the very first 1909 cars was held in place by a steel strap wrapped around the tube and fastened by a mag ring bolt.
The first 1909 cars used a steel transmission cover had a sheet metal funnel so the flywheel would sling oil into the funnel to fill the oil tube I pictured.

Pat, the early pistons (4.89 lbs each) didn’t have any oil return holes.I also pictured an early 1909 rod. Not the step in the rod cap and corresponding rod end and the built in rod dipper.

Thanks Kim for posting!! That's an amazing difference. My '12 engine had the smaller funnel listed as "Present Standard Oil Pipe" I never had a doubt about which one to use during a rebuild after seeing the Large later style!! Now it's a nice show N tell. I also installed an external line and welded into the alum HH the little angle diverter like the later ones have cast there. Would be an interesting comparison of the "high flow" outside oil line volumes.
