26/27 running board support orientation ?

Post by JonLevine » Mon May 22, 2023 10:35 pm

I am piecing together a 26 roadster pickup. The 26 chassis I stated with came with the two correct 26/27 running board supports but the rivets had been cut and they were removed from the frame. I notice that they are identical and that they have two small holes in them in the area in between the frame rails. One hole is right in the center of the drive shaft loop and the other hole is a few inches inside the frame rail but only on one side. In one of the supports I found what appears to be some type of wire support that is made of thin wire it’s self that was inserted in one of these side holes and had the tail bent over to secure it in the hole. I am getting ready to rivet these supports back on the frame and I want to know how to orient them relative to this off set hole. Should the supports be installed so that the offset holes are on the drivers side or the passengers side? I can’t see any other indication of what is front and what is back with these supports, they appear to be identical. I am wondering if these holes were to install wire retainers for the positive battery cable run from the battery to the starter button on the floor and that the supports should be installed with these small offset holes on the drivers side for this purpose? Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I have heard that these holes were for clips to hold the tail light wire. If I remember correctly , these holes should be on the drivers side>

The tailight wire does go down the left side of the frame. I use one of those holes for the coil spring for the equalizer on my Rocky Mountain Brakes. Perhaps they were used in the manufacturing process for something.

The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.

Awesome information, thank you! Looks like the hole goes on the drivers side on the front support and the passenger side on the rear support. The wire support was for the taillight wire. I see now that these wire supports are available as restoration parts. Thanks again.

On my '27 touring car there is nothing attached to either running board support on the right side, and no extra holes in the supports on the right side. Any holes other then for the mounting brackets are on the driver's side front and rear.
