DELIMA - MOTOR MISSING on 3 & 4

Post by nicklm » Sun Jul 23, 2023 9:29 am

I posted that 3 & 4 cylinders were not working but 1 & 2 working well.
Not the head gasket with 50 pounds of pressure in all 4 cylinders. Strong spark on all 4 cylinders. Intake manifold not leaking. All cylinders and valves going up and down from sparkplug hole examination.

I took all of the suggestions from the form and also spoke with the rebuilders of the motor. Tom Graham suggested looking in the valve chamber to see if they all were ok. Good suggestion.

That proved to be the answer. One of the retainers failed and the pin came out of the #3 intake valve. With the #3 not working and the valve floating around, it also disabled #4 because of the intake interconnection.

Thanks everyone for all the recommendations to solving of this problem. I appreciate any and all of the help. This may save someone from this delima if it happens again.

Nick

glad you're back on the road! And really generous to share the outcome with the Forum :)

In retrospect, it's kind of obvious (and not even terribly unusual), so kudos to Tom for the diagnosis.

Interesting that you got even compression on all cylinders! I would have expected it would show up on a compression test!
Good you got going again.

The valve had to be closing on its own to get a good compression reading. Unexpected.
Retainer pin failures are not that uncommon. Effecting/killing 2 cylinders is unusual.
