I finally got Steve on the phone tonight. He sounded good and very alert. Still some confusion about what happened. Not uncommon at all. He is still in Indiana and wanting to get out of here. I guess they are waiting on the insurance company to approve the abulance ride. Go figure. I sent his computer off yesterday for major surgery and reconstruction. It looked as bad as his model T.
Just wanted to let everyone know how things are going.

Thank you so very much Dallas! I swear I think I need a "how is Steve Jelf" fix at least twice every day! First thing I check when I get up from my usual bad night's sleep. Then check about six to ten times during each day.

Thanks Dallas. Has the insurance scoundrels "settled up" yet as far as his car goes? And of course I suspect no matter which insurance does the payout, it'll all be predicated on what he claimed as the ACV of his car I would imagine.

It is my understanding that Steve has Hagerty. Hagerty normally writes "agreed value" policies, so any insurance company will pretty much have to pony up that amount of money. One issue that rears it's ugly head is if the insurance company of the driver who hit Steve pays to total the wreck, it may well be entitled to keep the wreck. Realistically the insurance company really doesn't want a totaled Model T Ford, but they will be within their rights to sell it back to Steve. It probably won't be a lot, but It could be a few dollars.

John, due to my line of work repairing vintage automobiles that have been involved in similar situations, I have been privy to how some of this works. If Steve has insurance thru Hagerty, there are several options. Hagerty has an option on the policy called Cherished Value which allows the vehicle owner to retain their vehicle in the event of a total loss claim. If Steve has this, then he can file his claim thru his own Hagerty underwriter and ask them to subrogate to the other party's insurance company. This is generally the most hassle-free way because the policy is usually based on a stated value which eliminates the other party's adjuster from undervaluing the vehicle. Additionally, because the other driver is at fault, this does not affect Steve's future premiums thru Hagerty.

Second, generally speaking most insurance companies will split the claims payouts between medical and assets (...because the medical often takes longer to settle), -and with that said, reimbursement for loss of the Model-T will be minor compared to the other party's insurance paying compensation for the Personal Injury (-think paint & suffering). I would think that when Steve settles with the other party's insurance company over the negligence that caused the wreck, Steve will be able to pay all of his medical, and have enough cash leftover to return his '15 to a condition much greater than it was prior.

Until there is a police report, we do not know who is responsible. No one here was a witness, so everything up to now is just speculation. I have not heard of any agent coming out to look at the car yet.
