Oval Gas Tank Strap Finish?
The obvious thing to assume is that they were originally dipped in black paint, but is this correct?

Re: Oval Gas Tank Strap Finish?
I'm sure that is correct. I went through that with my 1925. I had found examples with the original straps too.

Tried a free colorize photo service on the Interne t https://www.img2go.com/colorize-image
set to "generic" & high res 35. Even the tank looks galvanized!

Re: Oval Gas Tank Strap Finish?
That photo has been around before and I’ve wondered the same thing if the two guys are tightening the hub caps or the axle nuts. The guy on the rear wheel is looking at the rear wheel and it’s got the hubcap already on it. So I guess he’s finished tightening it up?
It sure seems they wouldn’t need a heavy wrench to tighten the hub caps but what do I know! I guess Ford didn’t want the hub caps to come off very easily! It’s not real clear what the guy on the back wheel has got in his left hand. Interesting since it’s colorized.

Re: Oval Gas Tank Strap Finish?
It is a posed photo, so what they were doing/wielding need not necessarily relate to anything that actually went on on the line.

Re: Oval Gas Tank Strap Finish?
That very well could be a posed photo but using a large heavy wrench to put on hubcaps is more than it actually needed.

I don't think our Canadian sourced cars had painted brackets. When I load my stuff for the upcoming Bendigo swap meer, I'll check some I have for sale. I am fairly sure they are zinc plated, if not hot dip galvanised.

Re: Oval Gas Tank Strap Finish?
Mark, one more piece of information regarding your question. In the Encyclopedia is an extensive essay by Trent Boggess (page 579) on finishes applied to Model T bodies and parts. He indicates that the gas tank supports 2914-B and 2915-B are finished in Black Elastic Japan paint. I have relied on the information in this essay to guide me on the correct colors for a recent restoration on a 25 Touring.
