Who makes license plates ?

Post by Campbell Tellman » Fri Nov 24, 2023 10:09 pm

Hey All,
I lost the contact info for a man who will make a license plate period correct for my 1916 Touring. Can you remind me of his name?
Thanks,

1916 North Carolina license plates are porcelain.

You should consider getting a genuine plate.

Otherwise, there is a fake/reproduction on eBay right now for $10.

Are you looking for the gentleman who makes custom leather license plates with silver aluminum 4 inch or 6 inch high letters or numbers? I have to look the info up on him but someone else may chime in before me. I have one of his custom plates and they are very well made. Last time I ordered it was $150 per plate plus shipping I believe.

Hi Campbell, I assume that you are looking for a YOM (Year Of Manufacture) plate. Before you have a plate made, unless it is for display only, check with your state's Department of Motor Vehicles first. If you are going to use it on a driver, some states require that the plate be an actual, state-issued plate. Both Massachusetts (where I am from) and Florida (where I live now) require that the plate be real. Florida requires that you mail the YOM plate to the DMV in Tallahassee for verification. If you restore the plate they want to see it to be sure that it is real and the colors are exact.

Edit: I forgot to mention that in Massachusetts a YOM plate must be the exact year of the car. For a number of years Massachusetts issued new, dated plates every two years. If, for example the state issued new plates in 1924 and 1926, and you have a 1925 T, you are out of luck.

Also worth mentioning:

Depending on when your 1916 Ford was manufactured and originally registered, it would have had a plate that expired June 30, 1916 or June 30, 1917.

In addition to the eBay link I previously posted for plates that expired 6/30/16, there are some plates, including a reproduction, that expired 6/30/17:

Campbell,

If all else fails you could check the North Carolina Department of Corrections. I hear they have experienced personnel in license plate manufacture. :D Sorry, I could not pass up this opportunity to install a smile.

Seriously best of luck with your quest.

Don

If you want an original tag for whatever year and state there is a gentleman in Salisbury NC that has thousands of car, truck and motorcycle tags. I bought one for every antique car I had from him. Ted the Tag Man (704)636-6928. My 15 and 16 porcelain tags are beautiful. I don't know if he ships, I just usually make the drive over.

Just for information:
Regarding: leatherplates.com. Steve Hammatt, who ran that business just recently passed, so that service is no longer available. Steve was a very nice guy, who loved to talk brass and classic cars with everyone.

Steve Hammatt just sold the plate business to a young man on the East coast. It will be a short time before they are up and running.

Morning, all,

The website www.felix2.com is owned by a guy who allegedly has the world’s largest and most complete license plate collection. Found an original YOM 1914 Alabama porcelain on steel tag with them for my Runabout. I felt price was reasonable which was about a third of the price of a couple other available ones. Porcelain on steel are fairly rare in the south.

The site is showing a’16 NC tag for 300 bucks, guaranteed original. This guy is a reputable collector and dealer. Built his own warehouse and museum to store and display his private collection, it’s that massive.

Hope that helps some.

By the way, Alabama registers the YOM on your antique car for a one time fee of $ 16. The registration shows expiration on December 31, 9999, which means I’m good for the next 7000+ years!

Leather License Plate guy. Very sad news that Steve Hammett passed away yesterday morning after a long battle with cancer. I was lucky to spend a brief time with him last Wednesday. He was joking and reminiscing about our travels over the years. He was alert and in between short naps I hope I was able to bring just a bit of light into his life.

His daughter has found a guy in the mid west to buy the business. The issue is getting the large sewing machine and some other equipment and inventory moved from the Seattle area to the mid west. got any ideas post here.

Stay tuned for news regarding updated information.
