Early (1923-24) Warford, or Late (1925-27) Warford

Post by ModelTWoods » Sat Feb 24, 2024 12:00 am

A bearing vendor has new Timken bearing kits (except the one bearing made of Unobtainium) for original Warford transmissions. He lists separate kits for early Warfords made from 1923-24, and late Warfords, made from 1925-27. How do you determine whether you have an early or late Warford transmission? I'm sure it makes a difference so FYI, my transmission has an aluminum case.

Maybe more important is; is the set for the 3 or 2 speed?

1926 Timken numbers for Warford transmissions:
Name Timken #
rear main cup 11315
rear main cone 11157
spigot cone 10062
rear front main cup 28315
rear front main cone 28138
front front main cup 19283
front front main cone 19138
countershaft cup 07204
countershaft cone 07098

There is a note in the warford book that these bearings interchange with those in previous models, however, you have to replace both the cup and the cone at the same time because these new "type f" bearings will not fit properly with the old style races and vice-versa.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

MARK, my aluminum case Warford is a 3 speed. Thanks for the bearing numbers.

Hi Terry,
You referred to a vender having a kit, that would be great. When I purchased bearings for one of mine from a local bearing house I think they
got every bearing from a different source & the shipping was more than the bearings where. One of the aluminum Warfords I have I noticed the
input & output bearings are the same dimensions as a model A trans & can be purchased in a sealed ball unit. The same goes for the Muncie
trans. As far as the unobtainium / pocket bearing goes They seem to be capable of collection all the moisture in the trans! Keep in mind that
even though they may not be perfect they will only be turning the speed of the difference in the input & out put shaft speeds so are not as
critical as all the other bearings are. Many transmissions used a bronze bushing & thrust washed in the pocket.
Craig.

Thought I had posted the link to the eBay listing:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/233511729847?v ... 25efe0b860

Someplace I have another list of bearing numbers from other suppliers, can't find it. I got my bearings for my cast iron 3 speed one and two at a time from other eBay sellers, but that was sometime back.
