Cork inserts in trans bands ?

Has anyone put cork inserts in their bands before ?
My dad did and I was going to also. Wondering if the taper holds them in place, or should I put a dab of weatherstrip adhesive on the back side...
Also should they be slightly thicker than the band material, same or thinner
I will get some pics as I go, here's the old one.
(Kinda hard to see)
One had fell out, during installation or removal, IDK. I don't think a little piece of cork is anything to worry about, do you ?

Several aftermarket band linings were offered using cork inserts "back in the day". Reviews at the time seem to indicate they worked well, operated very smoothly and increased band lining life. I bought this set as a curiosity. They smell musty and the cork has deteriorated. The woven lining may also be decayed. From what I can see the taper of the cork discs holds them in place. They are the same thickness as the lining. It would be fun to make up a set and try them. I've flirted with the idea but so far I've been too lazy to actually do it.

I always liked the way these felt, no grabbing or chatter. They've been in there a good 20 years.
I think everything was rotting, but was still working good.
Pop had 2-3 pieces of cork on each end of the band, not as many as the picture you show.
I think I will stay with a few on the ends.
Got a good hole punch and a bag of corks, so here goes...after some spaghetti

That loose piece of cork floating around inside the engine would scare me!! It could easily plug the oil tube at the funnel or other places.
Otherwise I think it is a interesting project and look forward to further postings on the subject

Les, I'm assuming that piece of cork disintegrated years ago. All the others were secure, but one crumbled when I messed with it.
I ain't pulling the engine for a piece of cork !
I got all the bands lined and cork in the low and brake. Installed reverse and it seems too tight, barely got the nut on a few turns ?? Maybe stuck on the lip ??

Dallas turned me on to a good idea.
Wrap the band around an old drum and pound the rivets in from the back. I was able to use my vice, but it works great !! Spreads and seats the rivet quickly. Flip it over and countersink and done !!

I’ve been thinking of trying some corked linings for months. My kevlar lined bands often chatter at the very end of braking and thought it might help. So I’m anxious to hear your experience with them once you start driving with installed.

Mark, I have 7 Model T's and all have Kevlar bands. One chatters at the end when braking but none of the others do that. I doubt it is the Kevlar lining causing the chatter but sure would like to know what is causing it.

Mark, my car had cork inserts from before. I have had no issues with them and that's why I did it this way again. Only wear on low was the reason to change them...and age.

All done, road test and time to readjust.

I put the cover back on and dropped my screwdriver underneath. Grabbed my telescoping magnet and found the magnet was missing from the end !!! I had used it to catch the nut and washer (even with stuffing around) and I took the cover back off. Turned the engine over by hand and thar she was, on the back side of the flywheel !!! Thank goodness I dropped my screwdriver, that could have been fugly !!

Yeah, things happen for a reason sometimes !!

Readjusted and cleaned the dryer vent screen and all should be good, maybe another low adjustment. It started raining before I got to road test again.
