Speedometer
What kind of grease, (if any) do you put on the speedo gears on the drive wheel. I can argue none, given the fact that grease will hold dust and turn the goo into a grinding compound, but hey, what do I know?

I don't use grease there and agree with what you say as far as reason not to.

My guess is the smaller fibre gear is sacrificial. As they wear they can be easily replaced.
