Take-Apart Spark plugs
I have become the custodian of probably a couple hundred vintage spark plugs. I actually think they are a bit fascinating because of how many different companies had their versions of the same thing. I was looking through them today and decided to take (I should say attempt) a few apart to see if I could clean them up. Some of them look like they were part of an archeological dig but a little time on a wire wheel, torch and Kroil quenching I did get a few apart. Not much to go wrong with them once the carbon is cleaned out and no obvious porcelain issues. I cleaned up 4 champion X and bench tested them successfully. Decided to check them under compression so I swapped out the plugs in my 22 with my latest restorations. Took it out for a 5 mile spin and it ran great! Just wondering if anyone else runs restored originals in their car? The way I look at it I should never have to buy another spark plug!
Kind Regards
John

Re: Take-Apart Spark plugs
I run 100 year old Champion plugs but have never taken them apart to clean. I suspect the take apart feature was probably just necessary for production.

I run original Champions in mine. I take all the ones I buy apart, clean them, make the electrode flat and gap them at 1/32nd of an inch.

Sure. Champion X (much cheaper than new), Splitdorf, and others. This page may be of interest to some:

Re: Take-Apart Spark plugs
Jeff, that is certainly the right style of plug for 1924. But how do you know it has never been replaced?

Re: Take-Apart Spark plugs
Would enjoy seeing photos of some of the more interesting and unusual plugs in that load. I've been collecting them a long time and am always looking for one I don't have.jwrightjr wrote: ↑Sun Apr 28, 2024 6:18 pmI have become the custodian of probably a couple hundred vintage spark plugs. Re: Take-Apart Spark plugs
I have a few Bethlehem "Five Point" spark plugs with four ground electrodes surrounding the single center electrode. The porcelains come in two styles, "fat" and "skinny". Both styles have 1/2 inch pipe threads.
