Copper intake/exhaust rings

Post by Belliott3 » Fri May 17, 2024 1:12 pm

Are the crushable copper intake/exhaust rings reusable? I’m thinking not, but I’d like to be certain.

I wouldn’t - once they’ve lost the designed utility of being crushed by manifolds…. I do reuse cotter keys tho’

No. They are designed to assume the irregularities (such as rust pits) of the surface they are pressed into. If they are rotated or transferred to a different port, the surface changes and they can no longer seal properly.

I have reused them when I’ve had do repairs on a road trip. The important thing is to retorque them HOT on reassembly and possibly more than once

If they're not seriously deformed, anneal them by stringing them on a piece of wire, hearing them red with a torch, and quenching them in water. They'll be soft enough for reuse.

It may be overkill, but I smear some hi-temp RTV on them, especially if the engine surface has any pitting.
