How to dispose of a used gas tank.
I coated my gas tank with the proper liquid liner five years ago. Followed the directions and even waited longer than necessary for proper cure of the gas tank liner. Always had gas flow problems and now I finally figured out why. ( I am slow ) The liner is coming out in sheets from the sediment bowl, which is clogging up the fuel line. I ordered a new gas tank, but what do I do with the old tank safely. I don’t want to blow up the trash truck.
Thanks for all appropriate advice. Frank

Soak it full with a strong solution of water and Dawn dish soap. Empty, rinse, repeat and it should be fine. I would then even "swish" some lacquer thinner around it as it will remove it and it evaporates completely.

Hi Frank,
Is the tank leaking? I had a similar issue with my speedster the tank came to me with the sealer already in it. pieces would sink & cover the
drain hole. I made a cylindrical screen & pressed it into the outlet so it sticks up inside the tank. You can buy a screen already made for a
VW Beatle. for under $10. That sealer used to be real popular with motorcycles. I took a friends 45 solo on a 200 mile trip & think I had to
take that old Linkert apart 5 time to get the stuff out of the needle & seat. Don't scrap it unless it's leaking!
Craig.

Re: How to dispose of a used gas tank.
30 years ago I had the 14 gallon tank in my homebuilt experimental Cassutt IIIM airplane crack and leak avgas. The tank was aluminum.
*We soaked and rinsed the tank for 2 weeks with various soaps and water.
*We then pressurized the tank to 2 psi with Argon gas to prevent any residual fumes from
Igniting, with the argon venting to purge any oxygen.
*I drilled the ends of the Crack. About 30 seconds into welding, gas fumes ignited and bulged the tank. I ended up having a custom tank made for replacement.
My experience is that 2 weeks of flushing and soaking did not prevent a very hazardous explosion.
Maybe I should have had the tank boiled out in a radiator shop.

Re: How to dispose of a used gas tank.
When we take gas tanks in for scrap, need to punch a big hole in them, besides where the gas gets put in. Try that and set out with the trash. If they don't want to take it, they won't. If the tank is actually not leaking and don't want to mess with it, sell it.
Where I live, if want to get rid of few pieces of scrap, I set by the curb, and it goes away.

I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

If it's beyond repair, make a planter out of it... or a waste basket.

I think that I have actually scrapped about two automotive gas tanks in my life. My method is to empty the tank and put it somewhere outside where it will not be rained on, and put a piece of screen over the inlet. Come back in about two years, and dispose of it in the manner that you would get rid of any piece of trash of it's size. The fumes won't last forever.

The local junk yard let's people dump old cars outside the gate if they are closed if they want rid of them.
What tanks I have had over the years, 2 I think, both non t, I just stop in at the junk yard and lay the tank in something parked there waiting to be crushed. they are equiped to deal with them. and it's free metal.Personally, I would like to get ahold of the tank in question. and use it for educational purpose. Learn what breaks down the old liner, find the actual problem and fix it.
