Vaporizer or NH

I own a bunch of T’s but know nothing about the Vaporizer. I buddy of mine has a ‘27 and is having trouble getting it to perform well. He drove it on the MTFCI Michigan tour all week and we messed with it whenever we had a chance. After the usual coils, timer, timing, and fuel flow corrections, it’s still not nice to drive. I, of course, lean toward getting rid of that carb and just going with the NH only because I understand them. What’s the opinion of others? In order to switch it to an NH, does a different throttle arm need to be added to the throttle rod? He knows that he’ll need new manifolds and a different valve cover.

Vaporizer system is unique. First off, it has an weighted air valve on the intake, A hot plate section that has to have a true surface to be mounted and to be compressed so that there is no air leakage from the outside going in to the mixture, may use the larger gas float, a different spray nozzle/ mixture needle adjustment, different throttle and choke linkages..... Our 26 runabout came with a vaporizer set up that did run the engine very well. ........ when I did switch to the NH, I used a straight through NH from 1920, an original 1912 larger aluminum intake, nos Ford exhaust manifold and installed a connector on the throttle rod to connect the NH along with new linkage to operate the choke on startup, and gas mixture...... So why did I put an NH on the engine?? I purposely changed to get more power with standard parts , sacrificed the economy of the vaporizer.

Hey, Bob. Power wins every time! We just got back from Michigan and that E Timer gave me another 800 miles of flawless performance on the 26 Touring. If you ever decide to do a national tour, Scott can haul your buggy for you.

Dave ............Don't get me wrong, I did have those parts in stock. The engine ran great with that vaporizer... So why did I change everything,.... With the talk on the Forum at the time with others comparing different carburetors and setups led me to change over. Do I regret the change, no I don't. I still have a vaporizer. I always appreciated your help and and Scott's , as always we'll keep that in mind. Thanks again !

The parts vendors sell an over the top linkage adapter, so no need to change the throttle arm on the steering column or replace the valve cover. an NH with a Scott Conjer high flow needle valve will make your T very dirveable.

There is a reason why the later Ts were almost all converted to the NH. I actually have never seen a vaporizer-equipped Model T Ford.

My car came with a vaporizer and it ran well but was impossible to start cold with the hand crank so I made the switch to an NH. It did start cold OK with the starter using full choke while cranking but I rarely use the starter on my cars and didn’t want to have to use it on my ‘27. I used the over the top conversion and it works fine.

Is there much to change with the choke pull/ needle adjusting rod?

You will need a shorter fuel control/choke rod. The one that runs up through the dash. Here are pictures of with vaporizer and then with an NH.

I have a 27 with a vaporizer. Its very "meh" It runs, but you cant hand start it cold. Im either going to convert it to a NH or just sell the car. Not because of the vaporizer haha, but i have too many Ts.

Have had a Vaporizer T since 2013 .When I got it had been stored for 41 years. Cleaned out the carb and replaced the Vaporizer Heating Plate which had burn holes. Starts and runs perfectly. If it starts to be hard to start I know it will be time to change the Heating Plate ( part # 6273 in Lang's). Carry one as a spare. Only takes one little hole to really lean out your mixture.

I have run my '26 with a Vaporizer for 22 years.
From cold it it always start if I turn 4 compressions with full choke first, before turning on the ignition.
And never start if I don't!
