Carburetor Question

Without removing the carb and looking at the data plate (on the engine side of the carb), can anyone tell me what model Holly this is- I believe it to be a Holly- and what is the function of the screw inside the circle? Looking at various carburetor diagrams, I cannot find this carburetor nor what is under that screw. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

That looks like a Kingston L-4. The circled plug holds a cork bump-stop that the internal flapper hits during full throttle. Reach behind the carb (engine side) and see if there is a bolt that is the horizontal axle for the flapper to confirm. There may be other companies that used the flapper technology too.

Yes, Mark, there is a bolt on the engine side just opposite the fuel inlet. SHUCKS !
That answer now brings up another question...I thought that I had an NH and bought one of Scott's Full Flow (never malfunction) float valves, and now fear that it will not fit the Kingston. I'll ask Scott...but as long as you're here, do you know? Have either of you installed his valve on your Kingston?
How do you like the KIngston....with or without the valve?

Hi Dave,
I run a L-4 on my firetruck, I like the flapper because of the weight (2,000#+) it makes it easier driving when load demands change rapidly
I have not run a NH on it to be able to tell the difference but I can cruise @ 40 + and have not had to do anything to it for over 10 years.

Dave, I have a Ford NH on my car now. I rebuilt the L-4 that came with my car and it worked fine. I did not install one of Scott's valves in it. I also rebuilt the NH and found that my car idles smoother than with the Kingston. Otherwise, I saw no difference. I have one of Scott's valves in the NH but never tried to put in the L-4.

I have a Kingston seat in my junk. The thread is different, coarser, as I recall.

Yes, Scott did PM me...his NH valves DO NOT fit the Kingston.

Dave unless you’re just in love with the L4 , you can pick up a decent NH TO REBUILD (you’ve already bought the magic) for under $50 dollars, I bet Mark Chaffin or others have one they’d sell. You may want to consider that as the best option. They are really easy to build. Best John

I think you'll find a NH with Scott's valve will outperform your L-4. The late Russ Potter told me that installing a NH was a better choice than rebuilding a L-4. I replaced the Holley G on my '17 with a NH and saw quite an overall improvement. With Scott's valve, no more stumbling when the fuel level in the tank is low or I'm going up a hill.
