Starter wireing diagram help needed.

Post by Sarikatime » Sun Jul 28, 2024 10:28 am

A friend gave me a starter, working well but full of mud.
I took it apart to clean it but forgot where the two field wires were hooked to.
Can someone enlighten me as to where the two field wires are supposed to be hooked up!
Thank you in advance. Frank

The two field winding pigtails are connected to the two insulated (from the brushplate) brush holders.
If you follow that rule it is impossible to connect them incorrectly.

Gentleman, great advice, Franks data I cannot open.
As you can see from my picture, I have a situation. What should I do next, my starter does not match the diagram above. Do I cross the leads?

Hope this helps. Note the positive & negative configuration of the field coils.

Leads do not get crossed in a starter.
1) I doubt you could & reach the brush holders. 2) Both wires are tied together electrically, so it wouldn't matter.
JTT3's picture is for a generator, not a starter.

Also, the mica does not get cut back on a starter commutator.
See the service manual.

Thank you John. Now to my original question. Where do I place the two field connection wires, to which carbon brush?

For the second time! The two field winding pigtails connect to the two insulated brusholders on the brusplate (NOT the two brusholders without insulators and are grounded to the brushplate)
If you follow this rule it is inpossible to connect them to the brusholders incorrectly.

The diagram posted above is for a generator filed winding NOT a starter field winding.
Attached is a photo of the brushplate inside the brushcap
Brushplate cap with rebuilt plate reinstalled.jpg
and you can see the two insulated brusholders.

Sorry about that folks I mistakenly was trying to help Frank out with a quick diagram so took a picture from the Starter section of the MTFCA BOOK THE Electrical System, page 22, without noticing that the picture was of a generator
