Proper Sidelights for 1914 Runabout equipped with Corcoran HeadlightsodDi

Post by OilyBill » Sun Aug 25, 2024 2:03 pm

I have a 1914 Runabout with a set of Corcoran headlights, stamped "FORD". I am missing the side lights and the tail-light for the car. Does anyone know what specific Corcoran number side-lights or tail-light would be correct for my car? I would like to find out what Corcoran number the lights would be, so I can search for them.
Thanks to anyone who has information on this.

William, depending on your build date would determine if it had a jewel on the side facing back or no jewel just a plain steel panel. A Corcoran with Ford on the cap is correct. Some mid to late Corcoran had integral mounting brackets early to mid 14 had separate mounting brackets & the jewel.
There are non branded Corcorans out there an (speculation) in a pinch may have been supplied but I doubt it was widely done. So look for Corcorans with Ford on the chimney cap.
I should mention that during the change over you may find some Corcoran lamps that have no intergal mounting bracket and no jewel. Best John

Unless Corcoran were exclusive suppliers in 1914, there is no real reason not to use sidelights of a different brand, and be absolutely "correct." I can understand your desire to have lights of matching brand, but the search can be punishing.

I assume there are no side lamp brackets on your car.....
If you don't want to change your firewall, or drill more holes in it, check the location
of the side lamp holes.
Your firewall side lamp mounting hole locations will indicate "integral bracket", or the
earlier "separate bracket". Would be my kind of luck to get a "pair" of the wrong ones!

If the two mounting holes are lined up vertical over each other with the top hole about
3-7/8" from the top edge of the dashboard, it was for the integral bracket lamps all the
suppliers made and the two holes are higher on the firewall. The firewall photo was from
an original firewall drilled for the integral bracket on a "August 1914" car.

The firewall drawing shows the earlier location style separate bracket stab mount. I have
attached a "integral bracket" Corcoran side lamp showing the top.

Ken,
Thanks very much! My car was made in October of 1914, so I assume by then they were just using whatever parts they had on hand to finish cars, before they started the 1915 run with the cowl dash they used in 1915.
I did not have the original dash board, so cannot say how the holes were drilled, but I will plan on making it per the drawings you show, if I can find some Corcoran side lights. I have a fresh dash that is undrilled for the mounts, so I can put the holes in that I need, once I find a set.
As the other posters noted, there could have been any brand of sidelights on the car, depending on what the assemblers happened to reach for when they were picking up a set of lamps to install on the car. I doubt the assemblers even had the luxury of checking what lamps they were putting on. as the cars slid by them.
Thank you for the drawings and pictures! I may not get it perfect, but I would like to be as close to the correct configuration as I can get. I have time to search for the lamps, and will hit the swap meets at Famoso and Duncan next year. I do have other lamps that are mostly black, until I can actually find ones that are more correct. My headlights are black, but with brass skullcaps on them, and brass lens rings only. I assume the sidelights and tail-light would also be mostly black as well, since they were ending the reign of brass parts on FORD cars.
