Duncan, Oklahoma combination Pre War swap meet 40 miles south of Chickasha. March 20-22-2025

Post by JTT3 » Fri Aug 16, 2024 1:28 pm

Folks here is an opportunity to spread the word about an existing swap meet that wants to integrate a pre-war swap meet within their confines. It’s a very successful 19-year-old swap meet located in Duncan, Oklahoma. Please spread the word to friends and vendors about this meet. It’s located about 40 miles south of Chickasha, OK. If you are a vendor or know vendors that have sold at Chickasha please let them know. The contact info is in the link provided. Kevin is really trying to make this a great opportunity for the Pre War vendors and expand the meet. More to come.

Duncan Swap Meet-From their homepage
The Duncan Swap Meet is conveniently located in the heart of the US in southwest Oklahoma. There is a strong muscle car and antique car tradition in the area, with many car clubs and enthusiasts.

Oklahomans are "can-do" people - they find old cars and parts to either rebuild or take to swap meets for others to complete a project. The moderate climate and minimal use of road salt helps local vehicles stay rust-free.

The Duncan Swap Meet is held at the Stephens County Fairgrounds. This wonderful facility was recently expanded and has 140,000 plus square feet under roof and 42 acres of grounds. Sixty-five RV hook-ups are available on the grounds, with a dump station included. Many flush toilets are located in the fairgrounds buildings. Showers are also available. The fair staff works hard to keep the facility clean and neat. They are very experienced with large crowds for conventions and shows.

If Bakersfield was any indication, This meet will be a raging success.
The HCCA field outnumbered the hot rod guys 4-1.
The promoter was ecstatic.

Thanks George & John for the positive viewpoints.
Ladies & Gents, Chickasha, so far, is gone but this is an opportunity to make a great meet. Think about it, many of the folks that are into ratrods, hot rods & cars in general have older parts that they’re not using or looking for parts they need. It’s a win win! If you were or have been a vendor or a customer at Chickasha pre war swap make the effort to get involved & attend the Duncan swapmeet. We talk about keeping the hobby going & this is a chance to meet folks already car enthusiasts that may be persuaded to take a drive on the slow side. This past meet they had close to 700 spaces sold, they are making a dedicated Pre War area with a slight variation in years (pre 1948). We need to reach out not only to Ford folks but other makes too. Early on Chickasha wasn’t just Model T or Model A, there was a substantial attendance from other make vehicles. If you have a personal relationship with some of the big vendors please make the contact and let them know too. It’s sort of like a Mall without the anchor stores the smaller stores don’t do as well. I would hope & im trying to get the Major suppliers to have a presence even if it’s just for delivery of prepaid orders. In my former career we called that a courtesy attendance. The goal was to support people who made our business viable. Sort of taking one for the team. Please forward the link to other pre war vehicle clubs get them interested too. Just so you know currently they have 500 spaces sold overall, currently there are 41 prewar spaces sold so your efforts are really needed to make this a new start. I should be clear I have NO, 0, Nada, financial involvement in this other than spaces I’ve bought. I’m selfishly doing this to promote the hobby in a central location in an effort to replace a lost gem. Best John

John:
thanks for bringing this meet up on the forum again and thanks for promoting the meet ... i have spoken with Kevin several times and have my spaces reserved ...i have also been sending out meet flyers when i mail my parts to customers ... this looks like it will be a good meet for both the sellers and buyers ...it would be good for the larger parts suppliers to be present at this meet since it is already a larger, general meet ...the addition of the early section will only add to the draw ... looking forward to this meet and to seeing many friends there ... hope we are neighbors ...always an optimist...Gene French

John:
some additional thoughts regarding a pre-1948 meet ... this is the best possible situation for both vendor and buyer ... the facilities at the Grady county fairgrounds ( Chickasha) were excellent and the Fairground facilities at Duncan are excellent as well ... there will be food vendors on site including the high school band and parent booster group ...restroom and shower on site ... and indoor or outside spaces ...
our AACA meet in northern Colorado has been cancelled for this year ... the Larimer county fair grounds ( event center ) has made it impossible to host a event due to extreme cost and use restrictions ... access for setup were restricted to the day of the event and site use required removing the chalk space markings from the dirt after the event ...cost of doing this event made it impractical ...
there is also some discussion of ending the fairly new Model T swapmeet at the Adams county fairgrounds in Brighton,Colorado due to small turnout and overall cost ...
these meets are important for the hobby ... i encourage vendors and buyers to attend ... several large parts and tire suppliers will make this event great ...smaller vendors with parts and a willingness to share knowledge serve the hobby as well ...
John , i look forward to seeing you , the Temples and George House and i hope many others next March ...i will continue to send out flyers with my sales and will promote this meet to our regional clubs ...always an optimist Gene French

Gene thank you for the effort to promote this swap meet its just the type effort we need from the community. Many of us know members of other brands of pre war cars and truthfully we need their attendance too. Please folks we need to really promote this & make the effort to make it a huge success. I requested from a board member to consider a meeting of the MTFCA board at the event an it was received with interest, so we will see how that goes. If you know any board members of the MTFCI PLEASE have them consider the same participation. Reach out to The Model A folks, Chevy, Dodge heck any pre War Make car clubs. Folks we will have a captured audience of potential new early vehicle folks to recruit from the current Duncan Swap attendees. We are more capable of seeing growth in the hobby by inviting someone to attend & even perhaps come with You. There has been must discussion over the years of the hobby in decline, be part of the solution in force. I remember a time when we had experts give seminars on the “how to’s” on repairs & restoration that really advanced our know how. Would you or could you be that person that shares that knowledge? Let’s make this happen, it is up to us. Best John

That's a good thing as some of us have more than T's and there will be parts there for ALL our automotive projects. I have a shortcut on my desktop so I won't furgit it.
If you can't help em, don't hinder em'

Folks a recent thread was talking about clubs & Formal chapters combining and I think it’s a solid idea. If we are going to be seeing diminishing numbers in the future it makes sense to a point. I like joint gatherings and then perhaps separate business meetings. I also think it may enhance the opportunity to get the other folks sold on Lizzy. I’m bumping this to remind folks that The Duncan Swap meet with a new Pre War area is an example of things we might consider. It clearly gives folks that are 40’s through 60’s cars the opportunity to become infected with our beloved T’s. If anyone would be so kind as to print the flyer out and distribute it to other pre-war car clubs of other makes to consider attending. In our area we have only a few Bow Tie cars but several Model T & Model A folks but I’m trying to do my part. Would you consider helping. Being in a club of 1 or 2 isn’t nearly as fun as 10-15. Let’s not end up on life support when we have the opportunity to find a new solution before it reaches that point. Best John

John:
we do all share a common interest in our early cars ... i recall the time when Chickasha was a virtual automotive museum ... many of our National clubs had displays that gave an overview of their specific make and often included displays of the technology used in that specific make ... steam cars . sleeve valve engines , 2 cylinder Buick and many other mechanical displays were present and supported by technical writing and individual club members who could speak on the virtues of that design ...Model T's were assembled with parts purchased onsite ...information was readily available and shared ... i have sent out 11 swapmeet flyers to customers this past 2 weeks and i will request more flyers from Kevin Hammock so that we can continue to promote this meet and support our hobby ... we should also contact the national clubs regarding their attending this meet ...MTFCA should already have this meet listed on their calendar of events and i hope have a booth onsite to promote membership ...always an optimmist Gene French
