In a bind and can't get a gasket to install my rebuilt starter in time for an event this weekend. Dan has one in AL but it's a couple hour drive and some gas money just for a gasket.
I see the pattern on the vendors site but not the thickness of the gasket. Don't know if this is just paper or rubber or cork or what. Thinking of purchasing cork gasket meterial from local auto parts store and tracing the pattern around my starter and using some gasket setting goop. Can someone share with me what the approximate thickness of this gasket should be so I can purchase the correct size flat sheet of cork?
I'll hang up and listen.

Any gasket material from the local auto parts store will do. Thickness is not critical.

Some people skip the gasket and use sealant only.

The next time my wife tells me to throw something away, I'll remind her of this scenario ...no, I don't sleep with this under my pillow, just used it as a backdrop. Found it in the T parts stash. FYI the thickness is 5 business cards.

The one that came off was so gooped onto the bell housing that I had to use a scraper to get it off and it felt like paper, then rubber, then paper again, so I had no idea what the original was supposed to be. Now I know. Bubba may have used that six pack cardboard and a tube of CRV silicone. I will try to use just enough to hold the gasket in place while assembling the starter.

You will also need a gasket for the bendix cover. The bendix must be installed after the starter is in place. If you try to install with it on the starter it will brake the magneto. These two gaskets must be sealed well because the engine oil is thrown around that area from the flywheel.

Make a gasket from a shoebox. Make another one for the bendix cover while your at it.
When installing either one use a gasket sealer to hold them in place and make sure you use a thin coat on the outward side. Works every time.
Bubba probably used some gobbed on sealer also around the transmission cover to keep it leaking at the corners. They’ve been known to leak at those areas also.
